What is education? Are schools a place to educate students? I always thought we were sent to school since young to learn to be a better person. School is a place we grew up with friends under lessons and guidance from teachers. When we were younger, we will listen to what the teacher told us in school. Some kids even told their parents “Teacher said so!” to show their parents that what they learned from school is always right BUT how far do you agree with this?
Yes, in primary school, we do listen and obey our teachers’ words obediently. When they say “do it”, we’ll “do it”. Does this happen in secondary school? Perhaps it is because of the rebellious years the teenagers are going through. At that age, students don’t usually take the elders’ advice. In fact, they listen to their friends but I can still see what most of the teachers are doing in the school are for our own good. We’re still innocent young kid that time, enjoying ourselves with no worries. What we did were all about making fun of others and laugh together. That is fun for us that time. Teenagers tend to tease each others, giving each others some weird or funny nicknames just like I myself, I have loads of funny names given. I didn’t know how my friends came out with it at times.
Then, some will be heading to college or some might be working to earn themselves some pennies. I’m currently in the stage of university life, doing dentistry studies, where most of my lecturers are either doctors or dentists. Life in university somehow confused me. I don’t get it why we must show so much of respect to a person who doesn't worth it.
Example? Alright, here it goes. Let’s talk about punctuality. We were taught to be punctual since young. Since time is precious for everyone, so why waste others’ time by being late even though there is this saying: better late than never. It is funny when these doctors are telling us students that we shall not be entering the class any later than the lecturer. Okay, I’ll say that’s true. We should indeed be in the class on time BUT most of the time, the lecturers themselves are late; some even took more than 30 minutes late. Imagine, some classes only take 50 minutes and the lecturer can be late for 30 minutes. So, how much time is there left for them to actually TEACH us?! Not only that, some lecturer just skipped our class without telling us the class is canceled. Even when there is class replacement, some LAZY lecturers didn’t even enter our classes. It is such a waste of time waiting for a person who would not come and give lesson in the class!
Another example? Hmm… say, back to the word education. We all know smoking is bad for health. In medical or dental studies, it is for sure that doctors or dentists would be telling again and again that long term smoking might cause cancer. They educate us not to smoke and at the same time they are smoking. Hold on; mind that the 3 words “They are smoking” really meant THEY ARE SMOKING! They smoked in the class, they smoked in the laboratory. They even smoked in the examination hall. Shouldn’t they be ashamed of themselves? Is this the way an educator should be acting?
There are many others that are happening in the university which I think it shouldn’t happen especially in a professional course like the one I’m studying now. They are telling us in every class to educate our patients. I wonder how these experienced doctors educate their patients. Why can’t they just stop smoking for a day or two? It’s as if they would die without smoking =.=! I really hate it when they smoke especially when I’m talking to them and they blew out the smoke, though in another direction. The longer I live here, the shorter my life would be. Yes, I really think so.
