When SHE says goodbye

I woke up with a so-so feeling. As usual, after preparing myself, I head out to campus for work, wondering what patient I’ll face on the day. On the way, the aunty sitting in front of me in that public transport cried after receiving a call. I started thinking at that very moment, “what kind of news can bring sorrows like that? Death?” then I told myself not to have such negative thinking in the morning. I was walking to my faculty from the 2nd gate of my university which was right opposite the newly built teaching hospital when I received an ‘unknown’ call. It was 8.10AM Medan time on the 10th of September 2011. Reading the word ‘unknown’, I thought it was a call from either my Indian friends (they love hiding their numbers) or my patients. No, I got my guess wrongly.

That was my mother’s voice on the phone. It was a call from family. It was a call telling me my grandma has left and gone to a better world. My mind suddenly went blank. It was nothing in my mind. I couldn’t think. I sat alone outside the department, away from my co-ass mates with my watery eyes. One of them who came late, saw me there and asked “Li Ting, why are you looking so sad today? Cheer up!” I replied “my grandma passed away this morning.” I don’t know how else to answer the question asked. I went meeting the head of department to talk to him about this to get permission for being absent a few days in the clinic. He was very nice. I bought ticket to fly home that night itself.

My grandmother was diagnosed lung cancer stage 4 about 2 months back. We didn’t know she was sick until one day she complained chest pain. We thought it might be something wrong with her heart. We sent her to the hospital for further check up and the doctor got an X-ray of her thorax. Only then, we knew it was something wrong with her lung. It continued with bronchoscopy and CT scan. There were a few other tests done, which in the end a neurologist called up my family members to have an appointment to meet up on the 8th of August. Anyway, the neurologist in charge didn’t show up. In fact, a young doctor came to talk to my family. She told nothing much, just the fact that, it’s lung cancer, stage 4, metastasis to the brain thus operation can’t be done, so do chemotherapy. Only medications like analgesic and anti-inflammation will be given to reduce pain and swell. That’s all.

My brother tried to ask more since the others in the family can’t speak fluent English, but the doctor said she is just a doctor from the pulmo department. So my brother opened up the file and read the report himself to try to understand more. It was written short and prĂ©cised “brain has mets. Opportunity of life for more than 3 months is very low. Family has been informed and they accepted.” I guess that’s the informed consent? I’m not so sure. I’m sad knowing about this news, about the bad prognosis.

I felt bad because I didn’t get to meet her ever since she’s sick. I stayed up on the night I was home for the funeral. I talked to my aunties and grandfather. They told me a lot about what had happened these few months. I cried the moment I saw my grandfather’s sorrow face. He told me “don’t worry. She went away well. She was glad that all her children and grandchildren cared so much for her. All she wished was this family to stay happy.”

What is FAMILY?

LOL u people might think I'm having some problem in me, defining all the words here in the blog. No worries, I won't make my blog a dictionary XD What is FAMILY? That was the title for my brother's recent blog. I'm touched reading that blog of his and somehow, by reading his blogs, I'm having terrible homesick! It is Chinese New Year today! How I wished I could fly back to celebrate it with them. Too bad, we don't have holiday here at this dumb place =.=! Guess what, I even have my Full Denture practical on the 2nd day of CNY =(

Why not just face the fact since I can't go home? My plan for CNY? Frankly speaking, no plan! I'm still not sure I'm going to have it with who. I miss my family so much. Whenever we gather, my grandma will cook good food for us. I don't mean she doesn't cook good food for normal days but on special events, she'll cook dishes which everyone loves! Aww man~~ I miss popo so much~~ I must give her a call tomorrow! Opps~~ no credit! =P yea, like my brother wrote in his blog, we're closer with my mother's family compared to my dad's family. I wonder why it is so...

I don't get it why we can be good with mama's family but it turned out so differently when it comes to papa's family. Ever since I'm back from Japan, I talk a lot. I mean it! It's A LOT! Sometimes I don't even know how I can talk so much =.=" I tried talking to them (my aunts and cousins) somehow it felt more like a stranger than a family. All we do is just saying hi and that's the end of the story. I'll only be back to Malaysia twice a year so I thought when I'm home, I should meet these relatives as a respect to them, to stay connected. It is funny to know, I always hope my brother would follow me there to meet them because of the fear of loneliness.

It was so cool, in like, I'll be there meeting my grandparents and then I'll be home after answering some questions. It felt like a routine as everything happened the same way everytime I meet them. This family is so big I don't recognized all the kids. In other words, my cousins. There were too many of them! I really can't recognized them. Well, I thought kids should know me but in fact, at times, I do face problems where these kids came to me and ask "Who are you?" Their parents would feel embarrassed for this, quickly explaining to them who I am. Well, I can't blame them. I'm staying here in this boring town for more than two years already.

Can imagine how cool is this family? Sighs... What is family to you? Family is a group of people who are very close to me. They know me. They understand me. They love me =) I'm proud with my parents though when I was younger, I don't very much like the way they're controlling me. Perhaps, rebellious period of a teenager? We call each other very often on the days I'm not by their side. I can say we'll be talking on the phone on the average of twice a week. Yea, I spent a lot on phone bills. I tell them everything and they're good listener. In fact, I think our relations are closer now. Maybe because I was still young, the reason they don't share a lot with us? Now, they talk to us about everything.

I remembered how they told me they felt guilty because I wasn't throwing a party for my 21st birthday. I always wanted to have a birthday party at home, inviting my friends to my house. They promised me to make a big one on my 21st. Too bad, my friends are not around my hometown that moment. I told them it is okay for me but they felt guilty not fulfilling their promise. I know they tried very hard to make me happy that day and I was VERY happy. Aunty Joan came back from KL to celebrate it with me. Aunty Cheng and her family was there too!

We took a numbers of photos and there were few where papa and mama like most! They chose that picture as their wallpaper =.=

and below this is me on my birthday. New haircut by Evon =) but it is now long and I really need her here badly.

I'm sorry I just post this up. I didn't realized it wasn't posted.

po po~ happy birthday!

Here I am in the administration office in the campus. Classes after the mid semester examination that day are all messed up. The lecturers changed the timetable like nobody's business just like today, when I arrived to my class at around 9am, thought I have Pharmacology class at 9am, my classmates told me the class was canceled. I went online in Medic Ed and Dent Cafe again. Back to the class at 11am, attended Pathology Clinic lecture which ended 1 hour and 20 minutes earlier =.='

That is why I am here right now to update my page. Life has been really hectic and IMT lab is very stressful as usual. It stressed me out early of the semester with its carvings in the lab, I couldn't get the signature in time for the first few teeth. Thank GOD I managed to finish off my molars in time. Next, I have to turn these carved models in wax into acrylic. Both the incisors are still on my table. I still need to polish them up till they looked as if they're made of marbles but I haven't been touching them for weeks.

Done with the acrylics, I had this practical where we have to get our partner's impressions for both maxillary and mandible arches. It stressed me out too that time. My partner's teeth are difficult. Wonder if they are difficult or am I just the weak one in practicals all the time? Many advised me not to give up because this is the first time I'm learning and take impression of a person plus his teeth are difficult. Difficult for me as in he has great protrusion for his maxillary arch, he has got a class II teeth. This is better still. My headache worsen when it comes to getting the impression out, especially the mandible model made of Plaster of Paris. Here, the problem is with his crowded teeth.

Guess what?! I used up Rp. 700.000 in just 12 days. I never thought I would use these much. Most of the money were wasted on the materials used for these impressions and models. OMG! They are costing me so much, really never thought dental material can cost me that much. I felt so sorry to ask my partner to be seated there again and again for me to get his impressions. Last night, finally I got the Plaster of Paris out nicely.

I guess the next practical will be stressful too. It is to get the right occlusion from the models I did and hmmm... trim them nicely, cut them in the correct angle and put them into an occludator. I only got 4 practicals left. Hopefully I can finish everything in time. I don't want to repeat such stressful practicals again. I had turned my life upside down. My sleeping time, meal time, everything is not in order. Oh yaa... I'm having my appetite back already so to my friends who are worried of me, as I said to you guys do not worry! hehehe...

I'm trying to take more rice nowadays to gain energy. I felt I've used up all my energy already. I don't where and when I used them though. Finals are so near which is in another 3 weeks time. This time is really different from previous semesters. We have to study everything even those which were taught before mid semester. I must really work hard.

Today is my grandma's birthday and here I wish her Happy Birthday and Have a Great Trip to Egypt and Dubai this coming weekend. I'm not very sure how long she will be off for travelling this time though. Gotta give her a phone call later. Oh ya.. I heard today is also the day where UPSR results will be announced and I bet if it is today, the results are already announced. Hopefully my little cousin brother has good news for me =) GTG! My lappie's battery is running out =P

She bought me stuffs, dresses and all whenever she sees something nice and cute, especially when she is having holiday overseas! THANK YOU so much Ann jie!!
